Metacognition in the Metaworld: Engaging Critical Thinking Online pt. 2
Welcome back to our discussion on metacognition. Last time we talked about metacognition, we talked about creating discussion questions before a live session. We also talked about how to keep minds engaged with current content through activities. Here, we are going to talk about my last two big points: leading students deeper into metacognition, and some encouragement to help you get going.
Lead them deeper
When you dig deep and hard trying to connect the information, that is when we can make those solid connections. It isn't through ease of learning that we retain information, but through the challenges, failures, and successes of learning that we retain information.
This is why you need challenges like activities and discussions in order for people to learn from their failed understanding. One way that you can help students really dig into what they're learning, is to have them do research. Have them look into what it is that you're teaching them, and have them read some of the specific commentaries that you yourself have read.
Give them some insight into the world that you're in and help them see this is where this information comes from. Then you have a group of students that are going to engage with the content and are going to be ready to critically engage with those discussion questions as well.
Another way that students can dig deeper is by going to various resources such as libraries or any local stores. If you know of anything that relates to your industry, it is a great idea to include those resources. Make sure that if you give additional resources, you give more information.
Not everybody is an adept researcher. Read that again. Not everybody is an adept researcher. Some people have problems learning information and others don't. For people that seem to have a hard time with research, give them some guidance or direction.
Don't give up
Teaching any course can at times be frustrating. This is just the way it is, but don't lose heart. Keep in mind that your goal is to create an impact in the world. You have the information and the knowledge that somebody else desperately needs in their lives.
That is why your work is so important! Having students step into a different way of thinking can be really difficult. It might take them a while, perhaps through to the end of your course, to jump into that metacognition. But they will make it because of your efforts to help them engage with a different way to think. Their lives and minds will forever be changed by the work you do.
Something to also keep in mind if you are having a hard time, is that when you give up, you aren't just giving up on yourself. You're giving up on your students and the people who have helped you get this far. Whenever you feel like a day is particularly challenging, just remember that this is your purpose. This is your destiny. You have taken control of it, and you are going to dive deep into that destiny. No matter what it takes.
Thinking forward
When you help others engage in metacognition, you're asking your students to work with the material in a different and very new way. This is done through strategies, discussion questions, as well as also supporting people and motivating them. You're probably their first cheerleader in many ways!
Only you can give your information to the world. Only you can express your knowledge. That's why we are so adamant about helping you and ensuring that you and your eCourse are ready to reach your communities and create a lasting impact.
