Setting, Starting & Measuring New Year Goals
As we approach the new year, everyone’s main discussion is going to be centered around creating new goals for the year. However, this is also accompanied by the difficult task of setting achievable goals and maintaining progress toward the goals. More often than not, we start off with the amplified intention to accomplish the set goal but that may shift as time goes on, and we hit the reset button… “It didn’t work this year so I will start fresh next year.” Over time our failed goals can diminish what successes we have acquired, and it’s a difficult thought to overcome, especially if you already deal with imposter syndrome.
So, It’s time to make our goals work for us… and we will show you how.
First things first… You have to figure out what it is that you want. What is your main desired outcome? Goal setting can be done with any part of your life. Don’t try to structure anything just yet. Simply brainstorm the main goals or outcomes that you’d like to achieve.
For ease of example sake, let’s say that what we want is to increase our revenue.
Once you have the desired outcome, we categorize that outcome/goal into 3 different levels:
- ABSOLUTELY Accomplishable!
- UMMM… This isn’t easy but I will try!
- INSANE? NO… IMPOSSIBLE!
Just the thought of a difficult goal could put you into a fearful and doubtful state. That will not benefit you. So we are going to do a mindset shift here and instead of considering all of the HOW steps to accomplish the tasks for each level, we are going to consider the opportunities that each level presents for us to make positive changes that will lead to accomplishing our goals.
You will have to make changes in the process. You will have to change to become the person who can accomplish the IMPOSSIBLE goal. You’re not that person yet otherwise you’d already have met that goal, and it’s not horrible that you aren’t there yet..but it also isn’t really impossible. Beware though… this does not mean that you need to necessarily work harder. If you’re already working your ass off, working harder will not be the solution. Working harder rarely is the solution. Instead, I suggest that you leverage technology, surround yourself with mentors that motivate you in a way that you need, and utilize team members for you to offload repetitive tasks that are distracting rather than focusing on hitting your objective.
With the 1st goal level “ABSOLUTELY Accomplishable!” This is 2x your current situation. It is extremely achievable and easily done with simple recurring actions. If your goal is to increase your revenue, and you currently make $100,000. Then the absolutely accomplishable goal is to make $200,000. That number can seem scary to some, but the mindset shift is that it could be 17 clients that pay you $1,000 a month for 1 year each.
The 2nd goal level “UMMM… This Isn't Easy!`` This goal is 4x your current situation. It is still achievable but it’s not easily done with simple recurring actions… It requires more change and usually is a point where people start to give up. If your goal is to increase your revenue, and you currently make $100,000. Then this goal is to make $400,000. This is a lot of money. It’s more than most can dream of making in a year. Well, it’s a good thing that we are active vivid, and driven dreamers… because we have the power to absolutely accomplish this not so easy goal as well. The mindset shift is that it could be 34 clients that pay you $1,000 a month for 1 year each. That’s not a huge jump from the first level. Plus, setting yourself up for success in level 1 will help you scale easier to levels 2 and 3.
The 3rd goal level “INSANE? NO… IMPOSSIBLE!” This goal is 10x your current situation. Most often than not this is the point where people immediately give up before they have even begun. They see this goal and think “I CAN’T”. So, if your goal is to increase your revenue, and you currently make $100,000. Then this goal is to make $1,000,000. Yes… that looks IMPOSSIBLE. The mindset shift is that it could be 84 clients that pay you $1,000 a month for 1 year each… to me that sounds like a much more reasonable goal than when I first think of $1,000,000.
Take a moment today to consider your goal, write out your objectives for each level, and then write down who you would have to become to reach each goal. What changes would you need to make to become the person you need to be to make each goal a reality? Take that special moment of realizing all of your hard work and where it has gotten you, noticing that you are capable of greatness and if you set goals like these, well, you might just take over the world!
